While Buena Vista is also listed in our lodgings section, you need not stay overnight or for a weekend to take advantage of these spectacular facilities.  They offer day hunts, fishing passes, and trap shooting for individuals or for groups.  See their site for more information.

North Monroe County is blessed to have two wonderfully preserved historic sites.  By far the most publicized is Rikard’s Mill, a restored and fully functional grist mill located about five miles from downtown Beatrice.  There is also a covered bridge and shop on the site, as well as a park for picnicking.  They host several big events a year that are listed on the Events page.  The other site is the Pine Lake Store at Buena Vista.  The store has been restored to good condition and includes a museum documenting the history of the area around Buena Vista.

The state of Alabama maintains a 94-Acre public fishing lake just west of Beatrice.  There are boats for rent, as well as a pier and campsites.  They have a sport on the Outdoor Alabama web page - just click above to see all the details.

One of the neatest things to do in Monroe County is to attend the local performance of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”  Every year in the late spring and early summer, Monroe County citizens state an adapted version of the Pulitzer-Prize winning book by Harper Lee, a Monroeville native.  The courthouse, where the play is performed, is only about sixteen miles from downtown Beatrice.  We recommend you come stay at one of the historic homes available in Beatrice (and listed on the Places to Stay page) while you’re here.  It’s the perfect way to enjoy both the play and the historic charm of Monroe County.  Ticket information is available through the Monroe County Heritage Museum Web Page.
